Prof. Wolfgang Sauerwein studied medicine in Limoges (France) and Essen (Germany). He is a specialist in radiology and radiation oncology. He is a member of the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen and a visiting professor at the Neutron Therapy Research Centre of Okayama University. One of his main research activities is the use of particles in cancer therapy: protons, neutrons, carbon ions and Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Other areas of scientific interest include the treatment of ocular tumours and the Monte Carlo simulation of medical linacs and the resulting dose distributions in patients. A core area of his clinical work is international collaboration to treat patients with particles in large and expensive facilities around the world. He is the author and co-author of more than 350 scientific publications and has organised a large number of national and international scientific congresses and workshops.
