All interested persons are kindly invited to come to Świerk on January 9, 2017 to participate in a hopefully vivid discussion on nuclear power. The  "Nuclear power costs and role in power balance" seminar will be held in the Świerk Science and Technology Park building. The event will start at 11:30 on Monday, January 9, 2017. Experts from some anti-nuclear NGOs are expected.

Agenda:

11.30
Ocena I analiza całkowitych kosztów wytwarzania energii elektrycznej z energii jądrowej i z innych źródeł
(Evaluation and analysis of total costs of electric energy production from nuclear power and other energy sources)
Professor Andrzej Strupczewski, NCBJ (lecture in Polish)

12.15
Koszty wytwarzania energii elektrycznej z elektrowni jądrowych - krytyka podejścia LCOE
(Costs of electric energy production from NPPs - discussion of LCOE approach)
Dr. Adam Szymanski, The Wydma Lubiatowska NGO (lecture in Polish)

13.00
Energy intensities, EROI (energy returned on invested), for electric energy sources
Dr. Daniel Weissbach, Institut für Festkörper-Kernphysik GmbH, Leistikowstraße 2, 14050 Berlin

No simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The first speaker will present a comprehensive assessment of all electricity production-related costs paid by the society (price paid to the plant operator for electric energy delivered by them to the national grid, plant-grid cooperation costs, cost of maintaning indispensable reserves for periods when either renewable sources like wind/solar/hydro are unavailable or the plant must be shut down for an overhaul/repair/maintenance, costs related to loss of life/health by personnel involved in any phase of the plant  life-cycle i.e. plant development, construction, decomissioning). The costs will be evaluated for the entire plant life-cycle according to the "from cradle to grave" LCOE (Levelised Cost of Electricity) approach. More in the attached NCBJ report Evaluation and analysis of total costs of electricity produced in Poland from varous sources of energy (in Polish).

The second speaker will criticise the LCOE approach and present a thesis that nuclear power costs are in fact a few times higher than those assessed according to the LCOE approach.

The third speaker will present one of the nuclear power crucial aspects i.e. its role in the power balance. Expert unanimously forecast coming global deficit of energy. Therefore the ratio of energy that could be obtained to energy one has to invest in various fuel cycles becomes a key issue, far more important than any fiscal aspect. In the long run that ratio will be deciding on power costs. The EROI (Energy Returned on Invested) ratio will decide on attainable and maintainable civilization level.

NCBJ bus leaves to Świerk at 10.25 am from entrance gate to the Hoża 69 premises in Warsaw.

Guests are kindly requested to e-mail their personal data (surname, name, ID / pass number, residence) before January 5, 2017 to the deis@ncbj.gov.pl address. The data are necessary to get NCBJ passes ready for them. Security procedures require each guest wishing to enter NCBJ premises to get such pass.
