Today, Directors of both Institutes, Professor Andrzej Chmielewski and Professor Krzysztof Kurek, have signed an agreement on joint coordination of PhD school by IChTJ and NCBJ. The agreement’s validity is for an indefinite period. The student will be able to obtain a PhD title in physics or chemistry. The courses will begin in October.

The programme of this project assumes, among other things:

„The need of creation a PhD school led by two science-and-research entities: National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) and Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology (IChTJ), has been existed for a long time. It is a result of a common history of both institutes, dating as far as the 50 s, complementarity of conducted research, and, most recently, increasing needs of science and economy, resulting from the demand to educate a staff of specialists for Polish Nuclear Power Programme (PPEJ), as well as the ever expanding uses of ionising radiation. The increasing role of Polish science in the global research space requires education of additional staff as well, with emphasis on innovation. Entities that take part in implementing programmes related to nuclear science, be it research institutions, universities, or national administration, expect their employees to be highly educated and have broad interdisciplinary knowledge in nuclear physics and chemistry. Talented graduates of PhD studies with specialist knowledge of both nuclear physics, astrophysics and radiochemistry, radiation chemistry or radiobiology will be a great addition to Polish scientific community. Globalization of scientific research and open research space in Europe guarantee job opportunities not only in the country, but also in many foreign institutions.

Currently both institutions educate a few dozens of PhD students. They will remain in this form of study, while the PhD school will begin recruitment for courses beginning in October. Organizers wish to conduct new recruitments every six months. This will also be the frequency of proposing subjects for PhD dissertations. The students will receive scholarships, the minimal sum of which is specified in an appropriate act of law. After two years and after positive evaluation of student’s education, the amount of the scholarship will be increased, in accordance with other regulations. Both institutes were awarding grants in the amount higher than the minimal and this is not likely to change. Details will be provided within the next weeks and months on the school’s website and on main websites of NCBJ and IChTJ.
