Discussion of the HTGR-POLA project once again in the Polish Parliament
19-12-2024
Today, at a meeting of the Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy and the Parliamentary Group on Energy and Hydrogen, discussions will again be held on the continuation of the final phase of the project, the detailed design of the first Polish high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, HTGR-POLA, at the National Centre for Nuclear Research in Świerk.
Representatives of NCBJ: Prof. Mariusz Dąbrowski and Dr. Józef Sobolewski will speak in detail about the 4th generation nuclear reactor construction project itself and present the possibilities of commercialising nuclear technology.
The HTGR-POLA (POLski Atomowy) reactor is a high-temperature, helium-cooled reactor. It is designed to produce heat at 750°C, enabling applications in a wide range of industries such as chemistry, petrochemistry and hydrogen production. Its innovative nature is based on its ability to produce electricity and heat simultaneously, which can fill the needs of industry for process steam at a minimum temperature of 540°C and of local communities for electricity and district heat supply.
The HTGR-POLA reactor project is the first step towards the transformation of the Polish energy and chemical industry. Its implementation will contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy security and strengthening Poland's position on the international arena as a country investing in modern and environmentally friendly technologies. It is also an opportunity for Poland to enter the very exclusive club of Generation 4 reactor manufacturers, and for Polish industry to create a real nuclear industry in Poland, building a supply chain for HTGR reactors in Europe. The design of the new reactor, which is being presented again to the Polish Parliament, was developed in cooperation with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and is commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The team that developed the HTGR-POLA project works under the leadership of Prof. Mariusz Dąbrowski and distinguished experts from NCBJ: Agnieszka Boettcher, Wojciech Brudek, Agnieszka Celińska, Michał Górkiewicz, Wacław Gudowski, Marcin Januchta, Jacek Kałowski, Karol Kowal, Aleksej Kaszko, Rafał Kędziora, Piotr Kopka, Ewa Kowalik-Pilarska, Tomasz Kozłowski, Dariusz Krawczyński, Tomasz Kwiatkowski, Jan Lechniak, Gaweł Madejowski, Janusz Malesa, Zuzanna Marcinkowska, Grzegorz Mrugała, Dominik Muszyński, Mateusz Nowak, Grzegorz Pająk, Sławomir Potempski, Jakub Sierchuła, Grzegorz Siess, Eleonora Skrzypek, Maciej Skrzypek, Józef Sobolewski, Michał Spirzewski, Andrzej Strupczewski, Mina Torabi, Robert Tuszyński, Katarzyna Tymińska, Jędrzej Walkowiak, Anna Wawrzyńczak-Szaban, Marcin Wójcik, Karol Zduńczyk as well as Łukasz Bartosik, Justyna Cybowska, Przemysław Nawrocki, Aleksandra Niepokólczycka-Fenik, Paweł Nowakowski, Emilia Wilińska and Jerzy Zep.
