The National Centre for Nuclear Research has joined the 'PRACE-LAB 2 Cooperation in Advanced Computing in Europe' project in 2020 as a consortium member. The agreement was signed in December 2019 and concerns the co-financing of Project POIR. 04.02.00-00-C003/19-00 under Action 4.2 of the Operational Programme Intelligent Development 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

As part of the project, NCBJ will purchase HPC (High Performance Computing) research equipment, i.e. a processing system based on specialised processing units, and carry out a series of development works including the creation of systems and services that will be made available on the PRACE-LAB2 infrastructure upon completion of the project.

The main objective of the PRACE-LAB2 project, is to provide specialised computer architectures applicable to the analysis of large volumes of data, using elements of artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as simulation of quantum computing. In the area of economics, the development work focuses on the provision of modern cloud container solutions and new services, including HPCaaS (HPC as a Service).

The project is being carried out by a consortium of scientific entities with many years of experience in the field of high-powered computers:

  • Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Centre (leader)
  • AGH University of Science and Technology Stanisław Staszic Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet
  • National Centre for Nuclear Research
  • Gdańsk University of Technology CI TASK
  • Wrocław University of Technology - Wrocław Centre for Networking and Supercomputing
