National Centre for Nuclear Research in the national radiation monitoring network

16-01-2026

A new early detection station for radioactive contamination has been launched at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ). It is one of seven new locations that have been included in the national radiation monitoring network managed by the National Atomic Energy Agency.

Currently, the network consists of 65 early detection stations for radioactive contamination. They are an important element of the Polish radiation monitoring system and, thanks to continuous testing of ionising radiation levels, allow for ongoing assessment of the radiation situation. The system is also supported by highly sensitive ASS-500 stations managed by the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection (13 locations), stations belonging to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management – National Research Institute (9 locations) and measuring stations of the Ministry of National Defence (13 locations).

Data from the stations enable early detection and rapid response to possible radiation hazards. The network transmits measurement data, which is analysed on an ongoing basis at the Radiation Events Centre of the National Atomic Energy Agency. This information is also publicly available at: https://monitoring.paa.gov.pl/maps-portal/

In 2026, another 10 early detection stations are planned to be launched. According to the Polish Nuclear Power Programme, by 2033 there will be at least 145 stations operating in the country.
