NCBJ co-organizes LSST@Europe7 – an international astronomy conference in Poznań

Scientists from the National Centre for Nuclear Research, under the supervision of Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, coordinator of the Polish research team operating within the LSST consortium, are co-organizing the LSST@Europe7 conference, which will take place from September 15–19, 2025, in Poznań.

The event brings together international researchers focused on the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project carried out at the Vera Rubin Observatory. The conference is another Polish contribution to this international project, following the premiere of Rubin First Look, during which images from the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile were presented for the first time.

[https://www.ncbj.gov.pl/aktualnosci/premierowy-pokaz-nieba-z-obserwator…] The National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ), leader of the Polish LSST consortium, is actively participating in LSST@Europe7 – the seventh edition of the European conference on science and technology related to the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The conference provides an opportunity to present the first results of research conducted within this groundbreaking astronomical project.

The conference, co-organized by NCBJ with other scientific institutions, aims to integrate the European scientific community around LSST and the Vera Rubin Observatory. Particular attention will be paid to the challenges associated with analyzing massive datasets and the opportunities that participation in this global endeavor opens up for Polish and European researchers.

"We are organizing the LSST@Europe conference in Poland at a special time – a few months ago, the telescope at the Vera Rubin Observatory conducted its first successful observations." We are entering a new phase of our adventure with large astronomical data – and I am very pleased that our team at the National Centre for Nuclear Research is part of this adventure,” says Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, chair of the conference Scientific Committee.
The LSST@Europe7 program will include plenary lectures, thematic sessions, poster presentations, and panel discussions. The conference has a hybrid format – approximately 120 people will participate in Poznań on-site, with the option of remote participation also available.

Part of Poland's own contribution is a data access center, currently being established by the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ); its development process is coordinated by Dr. Krzysztof Nawrocki from the NCBJ Software Engineering Department. The team from the Department of Astrophysics, led by Prof. Katarzyna Małek and Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, is actively preparing for scientific research based on LSST data. The scientists have secured grants from the National Centre for Science (NCBJ), including the MAESTRO and OPUS programs.

Involvement in LSST\@Europe7 underscores NCBJ's position in global astronomical research and the analysis of large data sets. Hosting the conference in Poland also provides an opportunity to promote Polish science and create new opportunities for collaboration for Polish research teams.
