Polish Centers of Excellence that have received funding from Horizon 2020 summarized their 5-year activities at a conference dedicated to the "Teaming for Excellence" competition Among them is the NOMATEN Center operating at the National Center for Nuclear Research.
"Teaming for Excellence" is part of the "Widening Participation and Strengthening the European Research Area" program and is designed to address disparities between countries with different levels of scientific and technological development. The concept of centers of excellence envisions building strong, well-funded research teams. They are to make use of the existing research infrastructure of the establishing institutions, as well as a number of open laboratories, giving Researchers access to their facilities through a competition of projects and/or on a rental basis.
The NOMATEN Center of Excellence was established through partnerships with two leading research organizations in Europe: CEA of France and VTT of Finland. The center's research topics focus on the design, fabrication, research and potential applications of new materials resistant to extreme environments such as radiation, high temperatures or various types of corrosion. In parallel, the NOMATEN Center conducts research on new types of radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis and treatment of civilization diseases, especially cancer. This work involves obtaining new medical radioisotopes, labeling biomolecules with them, and preclinical evaluation of their potential use in nuclear medicine.
- NOMATEN is a scientific and production center. The focus is on energy and health. The classical energy industry generally struggles with two problems: temperature and corrosion. In contrast, the area of medical materials, radiopharmaceuticals has to face the problem of corrosion and radiation. If one wants to develop materials for the nuclear power industry, one has to deal with all three aspects. Hence the concept of the NOMATEN center of excellence, which measures the problem of temperature, corrosion and radiation simultaneously - Łukasz Kurpaska Director of the NOMATEN Center.
It is also worth highlighting the successes of the NOMATEN Center to date. Researchers in recent years have secured 16 individual research grants (Polish and European), as well as published more than 90 publications in reputable scientific journals. The Center has also established cooperation with companies in various sectors of the economy, accepting more and more orders from industry, e.g. for accredited materials research. As part of the NOMATEN Center's activities at NCBJ, state-of-the-art research infrastructure has also been purchased, and numerous international collaborations allow researchers to make extensive use of specialized European infrastructure as well.
NCBJ provides NOMATEN with the Maria research reactor along with the modernized neutronography laboratory, as well as the power and computational competence of the Spruce IT Center, the infrastructure of the Materials Research Laboratory and the laboratories and implementation and business experience of the POLATOM Radioisotope Center. Soon, NOMATEN Center scientists will be able to use the facilities of the Center for Designing and Synthesis of Molecularly Targeted Radiopharmaceuticals CERAD equipped, among other things, with a modern cyclotron, and from the CentriX Innovation and Implementation Center for Industrial Radiation Techniques equipped with advanced radiography equipment.
