The National Centre for Nuclear Research and the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw are formalizing their partnership to promote science and the legacy of one of the world’s most distinguished scientists. The agreement signed today paves the way for joint educational projects, events, and initiatives aimed at introducing the public to the achievements of the Polish Nobel laureate.

On March 30, 2026, a ceremony was held at the National Centre for Nuclear Research to sign a cooperation agreement between the NCBJ and the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw. The institutions will work together to promote the life and achievements of this outstanding scientist, including through joint conferences, publications, and educational projects.

During the event, a special set of LEGO bricks developed by the National Centre for Nuclear Research was also presented to the Museum, enabling the construction of a model of the MARIA research reactor. This initiative is part of efforts to popularize science and explain nuclear energy issues in an accessible way.

The Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw is the only place in the world entirely dedicated to promoting the life and work of Poland’s most famous Nobel laureate and her family. The National Centre for Nuclear Research is also inextricably linked to her legacy. Poland’s only research nuclear reactor bears the Nobel laureate’s name, and discoveries in the fields of radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry, and nuclear physics remain the foundation of research conducted in many of the Institute’s departments.

The shared goals of both institutions led to discussions, resulting in the cooperation agreement signed today, aimed at developing educational and popularisation activities.

– Science is part of culture, so it is only natural that we collaborate and exchange experiences that can benefit both sides. Education is a very important part of what we do – education aimed at showing the world that girls are also involved in science, and at the highest possible level. I hope that we will continue to develop our cooperation – said Prof. Agnieszka Pollo, Deputy Director for Science at the NCBJ, during the ceremony.

The collaboration between the NCBJ and the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw will enable the implementation of joint popularisation and educational projects that will introduce the public to the Nobel laureate and her contributions to the development of radiochemistry, physics, chemistry, and nuclear engineering. The Museum’s unique collections and the Centre’s infrastructure will form the basis for initiatives that draw on the potential of both institutions.

– As a cultural institution, our collaboration with a research institute is extremely valuable to us. We tell the story of a remarkable woman who was also an outstanding scientist, and communicating science accurately – in a way that our visitors can understand – is very important to us. We are delighted with your expertise and our collaboration, and we are very grateful for the opportunity for long-term cooperation – emphasised Barbara Gołębiowska, director of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum in Warsaw.

The signed agreement lays the foundation for long-term cooperation between the two institutions in the areas of education, science outreach, and raising public awareness about the importance of nuclear research. These joint efforts will help spread knowledge about the legacy of Maria Skłodowska-Curie and its contemporary significance for the advancement of science and technology.
